If you grew up in the Chicago area or have studied Chicago's history, most of these names should be familiar to you. The Graceland Cemetery is like a Hall of Fame of Chicago in the late 19th to the turn of the 20th Century. An interesting fact - George Pullman, industrialist famous for his Pullman Sleeper Car and Pullman factory town, had to be buried in the middle of the night in a steel and concrete reinforced tomb to prevent revenge from the unions he fought. Also of note are Daniel Burnham (architect of the World's Columbian Exhibition, the Flatiron Building and Union Station in DC) buried with his family on an island; Ludwig Mies van Der Rohe, proponent of "Less is More" in architecture with a very simple stone; and Richard Nickel, photographer who dedicated his life to preserving the work of architect Louis Sullivan, buried nearby, who was killed when a Sullivan building he was photographing collapsed.
