Она по праву считается одной из самых красивых площадей не только Германии, но и Европы. В мостовую площади вмонтирован большой крест в знак почести ганзейским участникам освободительных войн. Площадь была основана в начале XV века, когда была построена Ратуша, которая и является ее визитной карточкой, а также собор св. Петра, построенный в XI веке. Это самые старые здания площади.
