Amazing how thick those walls are! How far construction has fallen, eh? Now you can hear your neighbors through the walls of your apt. without even actively listening... LOL!

You've got that right, Fizgig! The quality of work from many modern builders/contractors today just can't compare. Nothing is built to last anymore.

It's true, todays walls are a tat thinner, but then in those old castles it was actually worse with the privacy. Most inhabitants lived in dormitories sorted for gender -- and the ceilings where just wood, no snug sitting concrete like in modern state of the art flats, floorboards nicely fitted and covered with fine carpets where the nobles lived ad with a second layer of ceiling below, one layer slightly spaced below the roof and also right above the horse stables, so the lowest servants sleeping in such places got a bit warmer air from animals or heated rooms below. They had wooden stairs usually above the belle etage normally, and until the 16th centrury usually no glas windows anywhere, just a wooden shutter against rain and snow and the better people additionally sheer woven curtains and parchment frames to keep skeeters out or warmth in withot sitting in the pitchblack dark in daytime. I don't think thick outside walls help a lot when everything else has no insulation what so ever, just defense and the ability to build higher up when you start thick.
