Daimyo family emblems on the roof tiles of Himejo-jo. Each daimyo in rule used his own emblem-adorned tiles to repair old structures or build new ones. The swallowtail butterfly is Ikeda Terumasa's family emblem, and is the dominant symbol around Himeji-jo, as he re-built the existing keep in the 17th century.
