Phoenix Zoo
The Phoenix Zoo is notable for two reasons -
First, since it's founding in 1962, the Zoo has never received public money. It was built and has operated completely with private donations and admission throughout it's history.
Second, "Operation Oryx" - a program started in 1963 to save the Arabian Oryx from extinction. In 1972 they were declared extinct in the wild, but in 1982 they were reintroduced to the Arabian desert, and today most of the wild oryx can trace their lineage back to Phoenix.
