I simply cloned out the lights I did not want in the image along with the spill from the road. I then added an unadjusted adjustment layer in overlay mode to increase the contrast.

Oh, and I cropped it a little.

Thanks Andy - much cleaner picture without the signs etc. Still planning to go out and try this idea again.

I don't think this image is any better than your original, it is just a different version. I really like the way you have got the sweeping lines into the image, the composition is awesome.
I just thought distilling this image down to the red and white lines on jet black gave a sort of tron-light-bike-like sci-fi quality to the image.
I love it.
