A lovely picture but the composition seems a bit off.

Are you familiar with Focus & Re-compose?

Once you have a focus lock (finger halfway on shutter)
you can move the lens for a better composition. Here
I think I would have opted for a Vertical.

Apologies if this is not news - I have some great shots
that I am reluctant to process for exactly this reason:
I took the shots (and was very happy to get them!)
but cannot decide whether or not to crop them.

For exactly the same reason I would move the bird just a tiny little bit top left! I mean, after all, the bird is waiting for the fish to show up in the right "white space".

@mprove, yeah that's another option.

I always like to get the full reflection in the picture and
the reflection feels a little bit cramped here.

I still think there's too much white space though.

A nice square crop would really work well here I think.

Interessante Diskussion....

Nur der Hinweis auf den "focus-look" ist in dieser Situation falsch. Aus technischer Sicht ist es besser den Focus-Punkt so zu verschieben, das sich der Messpunkt direkt auf dem Gesicht des Vogels befindet.

Generally with wildlife I take what I can get.

If I have time I'll cycle through the Focus Points.

But with anything fast-moving I use the center one.

Then if I'm thinking artistic I re-compose (move the camera slightly).

But I have many, many, many pictures where the subject
is right in the middle of the picture. Then I have to decide
how to crop the picture - which is usually not an easy
decision at all.

Another point to remember - usually the central focus point is the best one.

They are generally not all equal!

Wow. Really interesting discussion. Nice pic.

On a personal note... I always use the central point (for me it's quicker to center focus and then re-compose, than cycling through the focus points) unless I am shooting something moving and with no obstacles (in this case I trust on the camera to choose the adequate focus point).
