Depth of Field extends beyond the focal point (say 'x' amount) and
also forward a smaller amount (half of 'x') so when you have a pair
I think it's usually best to focus on the closer of the two.

Here the female is quite sharp but the male, not so much.

Nice picture, I see females often but pairs almost never.
