Fever Pitch is one of my favourite books cos it makes me save a lot of words with girls. If they don't understand why I can be depressed if Juventus lose on sunday, if they can't realize that I'm like dead in the week before the Champions League final... I don't need to explain, I just say read this book or watch the movie.

For me that book is High Fidelity. I've never been *that* into football but the two books suit each other well.

A warning though: To me the books aren't re-readable, and there's a certain age when they make too much sense anymore.

(On a related note, I can't recommend Brookmyre too highly. Nobody knows about him but he's great fun.)

High Fidelity is great too but I dislike his happy ending. I totally agree with you, you cannot re-read a book but sometimes it happens (The Clown by Boll, one from Efraim Medina Reyes...). Every book should be read at the right time and sometimes if you re-read a book you may like it more. I'll try to find something by Brookmyre in italian.

Good luck hunting, mate. It can be hard to find Brookmyre in English at times. And yes, happy endings suck -- and none worse than Hornby's in About A Boy.

oh i am glad i clicked here, i am a Nick Hornby advocate too! 1st 'cause of High Fidelity, although i watched the film not read the book... but then i read A Long Way Down, great book! now i want to read Fever Pitch after reading these comments, and yes please post more book recommendations!

@bere: I guess I've been through all of Hornby's books and they vary in quality. High Fidelity is a nice movie, but the book is much, much better. If you're a music fan "31 Songs" is well worth a read as well.

Fever Pitch is to football what High Fidelity is to music. Basically a description of how mania can be justified ;-)

The last book by Hornby that I've read is "How to be good", I didn't like too much but maybe it's my fault, I've some problem with female characters. "31 Songs" is nice too, I want to read last two, "Slam" and "A Long Way Down", hoping to find again the style of younger Nick. Off topic: I want to suggest you the book I'm loving at this moment: Barney's Version by Mordecai Richler.

Looks cool; have added Barney to my Amazon wishlist. More recommendations?

I will use this space to suggest something more.
p.s.: I've find a few titles from Cristopher Brookmyre in italian, I will try to buy something when I'll get some money cos they're not cheap at all.

and yes, a little melomaniac here too so '31 Songs' sounds very interesting! and i can ever dare into the football world with Fever Pitch
and then i searched and found this
http://www.brookmyre.co.uk/
never heard of Brookmyre before, but if found among your comments here, bet it's good!
