editing exif?
Steffen Fagerström Christensen Team 23 November 15, 2007, 02:12 PM
Yeah, I'm unsure if we're gonna leave it in. The rationale is that it's editable before upload anyways, so why not allow it in 23?
Jean-Pierre Avakian November 15, 2007, 02:17 PM
I think that you should just leave it in.

Why not an import function? I use photoshop to insert the border, sometimes to edit the picture, every time I have to use a program to import the exi from the original picture. It could be useful for someone, but maybe most of the users just doesn't care about it... by the way leaving the edit function is a good decision.

yes, when the exif info is lost, OK, we can reedit it. What doesn't make sense is modifying data like exposure, aperture, ISO...

...unless you're using a camera that doesn't write EXIF, or maybe scanned analog photos.
"Power to the user!" ;)

Maybe if the value is null is not possible to add a field... For example my camera doesn't have gps so in my exif there isn't. I don't think I can add it with this system, only editing is allowed. Am I wrong?

that's an important question, pregnant!
power to change <> power to create info
pregnantboy November 15, 2007, 04:15 PM
Maybe to create is more important than changing, i.e. think about the scanned pictures.

geotagged scanned salami? Very web2.0

sorry for joking
but we got a point here, as I don't know EXIF and TIFF specs that are related to these tags, I won't extend this way...

But if we cannot create EXIF fields, than we will still have tags.

Just a thought on "inline editing of license": Will there be an option to allow different licenses, i.e. ones not in the current list? Could be done by providing a link to a license web page, or maybe to an internal page on 23 where one could fill in the details, for example?
Not sure if it's really needed, but might be nice to have ;)

About the exif editing: You guys are probably right that the feature doesn't make much sense on it's own. We'll be removing it. Mostly because we're not writing any exif data back to the original photos anyway.

@Corax about custom licenses: It's a good idea, but I'm afraid it's gonna cause some trouble with our flickr api support. Are there any real use cases for this that warrants the potential problems on the other side?

Corax November 18, 2007, 01:09 PM
Just assume you want to put your photos under the "do what the fuck you want" license, the PDL or any other public license not listed... whatever you offer in the selector, it will always be incomplete. Introduce license versions, and you have exponential growth :)
What I had in mind was a user contributed list, but that's probably unmanageable.
I just thought it might be nice if there would be ways to include other licensing schemes, but it's not that I can't live with what is there (for the moment, at least ;) )
Not sure how many people actually care about licensing issues anyway...
Steffen Fagerström Christensen Team 23 November 18, 2007, 01:13 PM
Sure, you're right. The main problem is this, which cannot be done on a per-user basis:
http://23hq.com/services/rest?api_key=23&method=photos.licenses.getInfo

If anyone has specific licenses they want, we'll be happy to add them to the list (within reason of course)

Corax November 18, 2007, 03:33 PM
The "within reason" portion is probably the point at which a user contributable list would become unmanageable.
Programmatically I wouldn't see a problem with the API, just with the size of such a list.
It was only an idea I had when reading your photo description, not an actual feature request ;)
