Was this in the former East Berlin?

Yes, just some houses down our street, the "Rigaer Strasse" in Friedrichshain. After the wall fell, there was quite a lot of squatting in East Berlin because there was often no clear ownership and the state wasn't working for some time.

These people have acquired leases, no idea who owns this.
