Standing on the Zimmerstraße, this was East Berlin. Note that McD is still in the American Sector. ;-)

I always wondered if there was a message in the German version,
but perhaps that is just my bad memory playing tricks on me.

There always was one at the bottom. But note the different wording - no mention of guns in German. Under Allied law possession of a firearm carried the death penalty. Never enforced, as far as I know.

The different wording was what I meant - or perhaps Berliners always obey traffic laws??

But I am probably reading too much into this.

The Germans could be fined for a violation of the traffic laws, no problem. But a West-Berlin police officer could never stop, question or fine an allied soldier, on duty or off. They had to call the MP of their sector to tackle the problem. So the US asked nicely to behave.
