Peace talks and negotiations have been running for decades but a solution to satisfy both parties has never been found. In a shift last year, Palestine started asking countries to recognise an independent state based on 1967 borders. To date it has only had observer status at the UN but now Mr Abbas is asking for admission as a full member state. I took it in Al Quds Day in Marble Arch, London 2010.<br /> Iman Darweesh Al Hams (Arabic: ايمان درويش الهمص, also 'Iyman'), (1991 - 5 October 2004) was a 13-year-old Palestinian girl killed by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) fire near a military observation post in a no-man's zone near the Philadelphi Route on 5 October 2004, in Rafah in the Gaza Strip.<br /> The IDF commander of the soldiers which shot her was accused by his comrades and Palestinian witnesses of using automatic fire into the girl's body as she lay wounded on the ground, a subject which was brought into investigation. The commander was found not guilty of illegal use of his weapon, conduct unbecoming an officer and perverting the course of justice by an Israeli military court.<br /> Human rights groups cite her death as one of several incidents which illustrate a culture of impunity in the IDF.<br /> According to Umar Abu Khalifa, 25, Israeli soldiers stormed the area, the girl left the bag and tried to run. Bullets hit the (girl's) bag and then soldiers opened fire on the girl.<br /> Palestinian witnesses reported that it was more than an hour before Israeli troops would allow medics to evacuate the body in an ambulance. At least fifteen bullets were found in the girl's body by Palestinian hospital officials.<br /> Dr. Mohammed al-Hams, who inspected the child's body told The Guardian newspaper that:<br /> She has at least 17 bullets in several parts of the body, all along the chest, hands, arms, legs ... - Double Standards!</b></p> <p><b>1989: Berliners celebrate the fall of the Wall</b><br /> The Berlin Wall has been breached after nearly three decades keeping East and West Berliners apart.<br /> At midnight East Germany's Communist rulers gave permission for gates along the Wall to be opened after hundreds of people converged on crossing points.<br /> They surged through cheering and shouting and were be met by jubilant West Berliners on the other side.<br /> Ecstatic crowds immediately began to clamber on top of the Wall and hack large chunks out of the 28-mile (45-kilometre) barrier.<br /> It had been erected in 1961 on the orders of East Germany's former leader Walter Ulbricht stop people leaving for West Germany.<br /> Since 1949 about 2.5 million people had fled East Germany.<br /> After 1961, the Wall and other fortifications along the 860-mile (1,380-kilometre) border shared by East and West Germany have kept most East Germans in.<br /> Many of those attempting to escape have been shot dead by border guards.</p> <p>Exodus<br /> The first indication that change was imminent came earlier today when East Berlin's Communist party spokesman, Gunther Schabowski, announced East Germans would be allowed to travel directly to West Germany.<br /> The move was intended to stem an exodus into West Germany through the back door which began last summer when the new and more liberal regime in Hungary opened its border.<br /> The flow of migrants was intensified last week when Czechoslovakia also granted free access to West Germany through its border.<br /> West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl has hailed the decision to open the Wall as historic and called for a meeting with East German leader, Egon Krenz.</p> <p>^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^<br /> The <b> Israeli West-Bank barrier</b> is a barrier being constructed by the State of Israel, consisting of a network of fences with vehicle-barrier trenches surrounded by an on average 60 meter wide exclusion area (90%) and high concrete walls up to <b>8 meters high</b> (10%). It is located mainly on Israeli-occupied territories in the West Bank and partly along the 1949 Armistice line, or Green Line between Israel and Jordan which now demarcates the West Bank. As of April 2006[update], the length of the barrier as approved by the Israeli government is <b>703 kilometers</b> (436 miles) long. Approximately 58.04% has been constructed, 8.96% is under construction, and construction has not yet begun on 33% of the barrier. The Jerusalem Post reported in July 2007 that the barrier may not be completed until 2010, seven years after it was originally supposed to be finished.</p> <p>The barrier is highly controversial. Supporters argue that the barrier is necessary to protect Israeli civilians from Palestinian terrorism, including the suicide bombing attacks that increased significantly during the Al-Aqsa Intifada; The significantly reduced number of incidents of suicide bombings from 2002 to 2005 has been partly attributed to the barrier;<br /> Opponents of the barrier object that the route substantially deviates from the Green Line into the occupied territories captured by Israel in the Six-Day War of 1967. Therefore they argue that the barrier is an illegal attempt to annex Palestinian land under the guise of security, violates international law, has the intent or effect to pre-empt final status negotiations, and severely restricts Palestinians who live nearby, particularly their ability to travel freely within the West Bank and to access work in Israel. In a 2004 finding, the International Court of Justice declared that Israel cannot rely on a right of self‑defence or on a state of necessity in order to preclude the wrongfulness of the construction of the wall.
