Letterpress 活版印刷（かっぱんいんさつ）type in cases.
Called 'Hot Metal' because the sorts 活字（かつじ) are cast from molten metal. The sorts are placed in a stick and then placed into a forme for printing.
Note they have the rare wi ゐ and we ゑ kana.
