quote from Wikipedia:
The Catedral Metropolitana in Mexico City is the largest cathedral in the Western Hemisphere. It was constructed in the Spanish Baroque style of architecture and includes a pair of 64-meter neoclassical towers which hold 18 bells.

It is located on Mexico City's central square, the Zócalo (officially Constitution Square).

After the Spanish conquest of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, Hernan Cortes began the construction of a Catholic church. This church was demolished circa 1573 and a new cathedral was built on the same place. A side chapel, the Sagrario Metropolitano (1749-69), is the greatest triumph of the Mexican Churrigueresque style. The new cathedral was consecrated in 1667, but the final elements — bell towers and central dome designed by the Spanish neoclassical architect Manuel Tolsa — were finished in 1813.

The soft clay subsoil beneath Mexico City, which was originally built on a lake bed, and the removal of water from the soil has caused the sinking of many of the buildings in Mexico City's historic centre. Underground tunnels to stabilize the cathedral have prevented its collapse and have stabilized the uneven inclination of its sinking.

I took this pic from the roof of the Hotel Majestic where Stregoika and I had a coffee.

At the 'poffertjes' stall you can enjoy delicious tiny, sweet pancakes known as 'poffertjes'!

The stall belonged to the Werk-Huizinga family and was often to be found at weekly markets and annual fairs. Similar stalls were also a common sight in the Zaan area. This stall was in use from 1850 to 1961.

Location: Overveen, municipality Bloemendaal (NH)
Building period: 1702
Relocation: 1938
Interior: about 1900

From 1817 until 1932, this bleachery was owned by the Gehrels family. It was the last laundry in the Netherlands to be driven by horsepower.
The upper middle classes would have their washing collected by out-of-town laundries every three to six months. Depending on the preference of the customer, the laundry would return the washing dry, damp or ready to put away in the wardrobe. In the laundry you can see every stage of this process. First, the washing was sorted - a dirty and unhygienic task. It was then washed in pounding vats which were driven by a horse in the horse mill. After this, the washing was taken on large barrows to the bleaching fields, where it was laid out in the sun to bleach. Next, it was rinsed clean again in ice-cold water. Finally, the washing was dried, put through a mangle, ironed and folded.

Stone

Detail of part of a miniature stupa. A stupa is a Buddhist shrine for relics. It is a dome-shaped construction usually containing statues of the Buddha, or other sacred objects. In course of time the stupa came to have a cosmic significance. Ultimately a stupa can be regarded as the centre of the universe, and reflects in its architectural components the structure of the cosmos. A miniature stupa made of stone, like this example, may have been an offering to a temple or monastery. Some such stupas were evidently used for storing the ashes of ecclesiastics or other important persons. These were given a place in the grounds of a monastery.

c. 19th century
Bronze, gilded

Yama, God of Death and Protector of the South, stands in a threatening posture on his buffalo mount, under which a body is seen lying. The god has a buffalo head and flaming hair. In his right hand he holds a danda, a club crowned with a skull, with which he punishes the enemies of the Buddhist doctrine. In his left, he once held a lasso, used to drag away the souls of sinners. It is now missing. Yama is one of the dharmapalas, or protectors of Buddhist doctrine. His fearsome appearance helps him to combat malevolent demons and other enemies of Buddhism. The dharmapalas are especially revered in the Himalayan region. Originally, Yama was a Hindu god. Like many other Hindu gods, he has been adopted and worshipped by the Buddhists, together with all his original functions. A Buddhist sign on his abdomen, a chakra or wheel, which is a mark of Buddhist doctrine, shows that the statue is part of Buddhist religion. Buddhists turn to Yama especially for protection from death and the fear of death.
