August 1910:<br /> One hundred years ago Eduard Spelterini was the first man who crossed the Alps in a balloon.</p> <p>At 1 p.m. Spelterini sang the Torero's aria from Bizet's Carmen, opened a bottle of champagne and then lifted off.<br /> (He always used to make this ceremony on his numerous balloon starts.) In his balloon "Sirius" he climbed up to<br /> 4000 m and crossed the Alps in direction of Torino.
