A Question about Eurovision's Geography ?

Tonite is the final competition of Eurovison Songs among European Countries.

The Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) or Eurovision, is an annual song competition held among the member countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) since 1956.

Each member country submits a song to be performed on live television and radio and then casts votes for the other countries' songs to determine the most popular song in the competition. The contest has been broadcast every year since its inauguration in 1956 and is one of the longest-running television programmes in the world. It is also one of the most watched non-sporting events in the world, with audience figures having been quoted in recent years as anything between 100 million and 600 million internationally.

Ben-Gurion told Nahum Goldman (one of the prominent Zionists leaders) before he died:
I don't understand your optimism., Ben-Gurion declared. Why should the Arabs make peace? If I was an Arab leader I would never make terms with Israel. That is natural: we have taken their country. Sure, God promised it to us, but what does that matter to them? Our God is not theirs. We come from Israel, it's true, but two thousand years ago, and what is that to them? There has been anti-Semitism the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault? They only see one thing: we have come here and stolen their country. Why should they accept that? They may perhaps forget in one or two generations' time, but for the moment there is no chance. So it's simple: we have to stay strong and maintain a powerful army. Our whole policy is there. Otherwise the Arabs will wipes us out.
Ben Gurion was stupid enough to think that the Palestinains would forget their country in one or two generations - they will NEVER FORGET and will continue to fight APARTHEID until Israel goes the way of South Africa.

Palestinians have been fighting for their own sovereign state on the West Bank and Gaza since their occupation by Israel in 1967. Peace talks and negotiations have been running for decades but a solution to satisfy both parties has never been found. In a shift last year, Palestine started asking countries to recognise an independent state based on 1967 borders. To date it has only had observer status at the UN but now Mr Abbas is asking for admission as a full member state. Significantly this could give the region access to the International Criminal Court where they could challenge the Israeli occupation.
How does the application work?
Mr Abbas has submitted a written application to UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon for approval. If this is granted, the UN Security Council will then look at the application and pass a vote. Palestine will need nine of 15 council members to support their move - and crucially no vetoes from permanent members. China, France, Russia, the UK and the US are all permanent members who enjoy this right of veto. The 10 non-permanent members, who sit for two-year terms, are currently Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Portugal, Brazil, India, South Africa, Colombia, Lebanon, Gabon and Nigeria.
On approval by the Security Council, the application would then need a majority of two-thirds in the General Assembly to stand. However, US President Barack Obama has already declared he will use his veto, which means it is unlikely to reach this stage.

Fri, 07 Dec 2007 04:43:58 GMT

The American preoccupation with one part of the Middle East finds cartographic expression in the inset map. An example is this hand-colored "Map of Persia, Turkey In Asia. Afghanistan, Beloochistan," from Mitchell's New General Atlas, dated 1860 and published in Philadelphia. The cartographer feels a need to offer an inset map showing "Palestine and the Holy Land," on the same scale as the main map. The inset map flags this geographic area as being of exceptional interest, probably on account of its Biblical associations.
