We had just done five months in the Med and had played war games with the American sixth fleet and their aircraft carrier John F Kennedy. This was the trip where we went to Naples , Toulon ,Trieste,Cannes, Istambul,Gibraltar and that disaster of a crime ridden pox hole Sardinia. Remember we lost two lads from our mess to the brutal scum Carabbineri and false charges . Cem Nicholson was one I remember who got 14 years. Also remember we went Casablanca before entering the Med and that brothel /cum belly dancing place near the ships berth. ( Very reasonable prices I remember £1 for the ultimate thrill.)
That big lass,ss brass jewelled bra ended up on the mess wall.

The anticipated refit to carrying Sea Wolf is not going ahead due to the massive structural changes and vast cost needed to fit the frigages out . Plus there is concern about vunerabilitys to the ships to fire in a aluminium superstructure as was demonstrated by the HMS Amazon fire in the Far east in 1977 that burned out the aluminuim ladders leading to the fire giving the firecrews a very hard time. Guess who let the paperman in to RNWS Portland Bill whilst Shandy was being so diligent guarding the place.
The sods court martialed him for it when he should have got a medal that time he bit a admiral on the arse.He was the supreme Navy dog in that he loved to meet other dogs and either fought them or shagged them ,it did not matter to him what sex they were either. And he was banned from all the local pubs.

       Portsmouth March 1979
Im in this photo as well the last figure near the gun nearest the Exocets. I was doing my special sea duty entering and leaving harbour routine.
I did do it 50/50 with a CEM who did not like the early morinng ones and so i missed the ramming by the Panamanian grain coaster three weeks after the ship was commisioned when we were coming back into Portsmouth at night.
The effects of that collision can be seen poorly in this photo mind but the new sheet can be seen just below the gun, where the damage was cut out and replaced. My job at specials in this was to rig up a telephone link to the bridge and call out all the orders from the bridge, ie weigh anchor ,double up single up ect. The most unusual thing I got told to say was "Watch out for Doris" I had to ask them to repeat that . Doris turned out to be a tug.

Sorry about the quality as its a thirty year old photo with damp marks. Was unable due to bandwidth able to upload as a scanned photo ,and had to resort to photograhing it hence the flash mark.
Rasing is Replenishment at Sea and Ardent is taking on oil to the connection just next to the 4.5 inch gun. Im in the photo on the bridge wing standing next to the captain as I did on every RAS whilst I was on board. It was my Ras special sea duty to be the captains RAS order recorder.
