the museum of arctic and antarctica is not the most famous one, but worth a recommendation. originally built as a orthodox church, it has been changed to a museum in the sovjet era. it offers an interesting view on the history of russian polar research (expeditions, instruments used on these expeditions, historic fotos, ships, airplanes etcetc.). not that you shouldn't visit herimitage, but you shouldn't miss this ... ulica marata 24a
