Except for its length, Saint Thomas is of cathedral proportions, with the nave vault rising 95 feet above the floor. The church is built completely of stone, according to medieval construction principles, using load-bearing rib vaulting. The church will be celebrating its centennial in May of 2014. Designed by famed architect Cass Gilbert, the principal elevations are embellished with late Gothic and Neo-Classical motifs executed in rough buff-colored brick and molded terra cotta. Cast iron canopies, inspired by medieval choir stalls, project from between the bays of double-height windows. The building, named to honor the French sculptor Auguste Rodin, was converted to commercial use in 1968 and designated a New York City landmark in 1988.</p> <p>In 2006-2007, the firm of Nicholson & Galloway was hired to perform a full exterior façade restoration at a cost of more than $2 million. The firm completely removed the existing terra cotta cornice and replaced it with new structural steel and new glass fiber reinforced concrete units.  Three corners of building were reconstructed with new terra cotta brick units and reinforced steel.  Approximately 400 pieces of failed terra cotta were replaced with new matching cast stone units. Kohn in Beaux Arts style & completed in 1902. Kohn used deep red brick, laid in Flemish bond, with charred ends to provide contrast and an appearance of age. Heavy limestone enframement & quoins rise two stories, engulfing second & third story openings & providing rich contrast to the brick as well as dimensional relief. Intricately carved & banded limestone columns uphold the entrance portico at street level and a handsome cast iron fence runs around the property.</p> <p>✎ The River Mansion has had a storied life, starting as the residence of a wealthy Broadway actress, devolving into a rooming house, then the home of (minor) royalty, back to a rooming house, then as a music school and now restored as a residence. The congregation has taken up residence in three diff't locations over the years since. The most current one (pictured here) was designed by Bertram Goodhue in the Byzantine Revival style. While the foundation stones were laid in 1917, Goodhue would not live to see the church completed in 1930. Gilbert for a railroad investor and banker by the name of Isaac Fletcher. Harry F. Sinclair, founder of Sinclair Oil Company, bought the mansion in the 1920′s and sold it only ten years later. Regardless of his relatively short stay in the mansion it has retained his name to this day. The mansion is now home to the Ukrainian Institute of America but is also known as the Harry F.
