Chrysler built between 1928 and 1930. The corners of the 61st floor are graced with eagles; on the 31st floor, the corner ornamentation are replicas of the 1929 Chrysler radiator caps. The building is constructed of masonry, with a steel frame, and metal cladding -- it is still the world's tallest steel-supported brick building, standing at 1,046 ft. (77 floors). It was the headquarters of the Chrysler Corporation from 1930 until the mid-1950s. (5 blocks, ¼mi.) long tunnel, then called the Murray Hill Tunnel, was built in 1834 as an open cut for the New York & Harlem Railroad (NY&H) which ran both steam engines and horsecars. The cut was roofed & bridged over in the 1850s, creating the tunnel — one of NYC’s oldest, if not the very oldest. The tunnel has carried trolley tracks, two-way traffic, and now northbound auto traffic.
