One could probably ask some administrative staff to join the groups. Can't be much more than a short database manipulation.

Name? Doesn't matter. I'd stick with the short one. "Photos" is kinda given by the topic of this community, isn't it?

All right, I planned to vote for merten's and nemo's pictures but I just got the idea and thus I made the icon for architecture:

My vote is with the
most simple, most widely known picture about architecture. (Why does it have to be a photo? everybody already knows it's a photo-community.)

Laudatio:
Showing a house this image covers the main aspect and the roots of architecture which are building places to live in or with. This is archieved without favouring or denying any style or architect by choosing some specific piece from a specific architect made in any known style of architecture. Thus, this image embraces all things architecture.

It's second nature as one of the most famous riddle for children makes it one of the most widely known, if not the most widely known, image of the term "house". Besides it reduces the austerity of the otherwise straight lines and sharp corners.

At icon sizes, some of these nice shots will turn into mud. I think we need an image that is simple and has a lot of negative space.

Many of the examples here will work, and I agree examples showing less famous examples of architecture should be considered over famous examples (so my photo of le stade in Montreal is not the best choice!)

An example of my own that suggest a more modest notion of (western) architecture might be:

I agree that basic is better, but anything represents architecture better than the blue man. Of the suggested pictures so far, I think the simpler the better, especially with thumbnail size...

The point is, that we have to find some picture that says "architecture" to most of us.

The problem I have with the above images is, that they do depict mostly single achievements of architecture. But by taking one achievement of architecture the groups image would make a statement -for the knowing eye - for a specific piece of architecture.

My idea would be to find a picture of a nice hut, therefore showing a image where architecture starts, not one example of an endpoint.

Well, I guess "need" is a strong word, but why not make a nice thumbnail of an interesting piece of architecture and add it as an icon for the group.

Certainly, there is a lot of photos that can be harvested for this purpose on 23. I give explicit permission for any of my photos to be used for this purpose (not that I'm saying we have to use one of my photos, only that I have no issues with fair use and copyright and so on).

Anyway, just a thought.
