I don’t know how to say this like a real OG would do, so I’ll just say it as a reformed G would say it…

…from the bottom of my heart, I almost teared up a bit. The generosity of everybody who donated and supported our dream and vision nearly broke me down. On the real, when we began this process, the piece that I feared most was the fundraising part. That was for a very simple reason: while we know we have one of the absolute best communities on the Internet, asking for money presents a whole new side of the game. It’s easy for people to show up everyday and leave their mark, good or bad. But when you decide to bring folks into your vision and goals and need to ask for help…well that’s when *CENSORED* gets real.

It’s like that moment when everybody’s joking and somebody pulls out a knife. Terrible analogy aside, asking people for money is one thing. Asking people to collectively cough up $20,000 is another.

My ninja, that’s a car.

So while I was optimistic, it’s still scary to ask for such a large amount of money. But then we dropped the campaign. And folks started donating. Then we got some rather large donations. That first large donation from the homey Derek…let me tell you, I almost didn’t believe Champ when he told me that we had somebody who wanted to drop $5(000) on it. I actually laughed in my car as I almost ran over a senior citizen. Her fault though. Real talk.

And when we crossed the $10K plateau, I was in total amazement. Champ can attest to this. We had these convos daily and even the fact that in the last 48 hours we raised almost $10,000 to cross the bridge. Point is, I’m in total awe and appreciation at the group of people we have here who think enough of our output and believe in all of us enough to hitch their wagon to the VSB brand, financially. If I could hug every person, I would. I do feel this need to personally thank everybody for every donation, no matter how big or small. It means that much to me. I’m not a person who is used to having to ask people things so my own independent issues came into play. So to see the community we have at VSB and the family and friends we have individually come through for us…well it just strengthens the resolve to deliver the absolute best product available.

It’ll be August 21st by the time most of you read this, which makes it almost seven months since I wrote “Rape Responsibility,” And The Fine Line Between Victim-Blaming and Common Sense” and followed it up the next day with “Takeaways From Yesterday’s “Rape Responsibility” Discussion.” I’m sure many of you remember exactly what happened here that week, but for those who don’t, here’s a summary.

I crafted a very ill-informed, arrogant, and hurtful opinion piece about how women can help to avoid getting themselves in situations that may lead to rape by being more vigilant and acting more “responsibly.” It was a response to Zerlina Maxwell’s “Stop Telling Women How Not To Get Raped.”, and I assumed that it would lead to a day of insightful, occasionally heated, but ultimately forgettable discussion and debate. Basically, just like any other day at VSB.

I was wrong.

It was not a good day. Dozens of women left comments recounting stories of their own sexual assaults. Some even said that coming to VSB and reading this was a slap in the face, a gut punch that forced them to recall some feelings they hoped to never have to feel again. VSB was (deservedly) trashed on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, The Huffington Post and at least a dozen other places. (Actually, let me clarify that. VSB was trashed, but Liz and Panama had nothing, I repeat, nothing to do with that piece. They didn’t deserve to have to deal with criticisms caused by something I did.) And, for many people, the sting still remains. Even last week, I saw VerySmartBrothas referred to on Twitter as “the guys who wrote that rape post.”

1. Be Ironic

This is, perhaps, the most important tool to twitter success. Be ironic about anything and everything because nothing matters, especially not twitter, which is exactly why you’re spending 8 hours a day tweeting. This thoughtless, juvenile approach to life, one you’ve yet to outgrow, will be your life raft in a sea of banal tweets. On twitter, no one actually thinks jokes about weed or sex or fedoras are funny—it’s irony, though how this irony translates to genuine humor has yet to be shown definitively. Some think it has to do with the portion of the brain responsible for humor. Others have offered the possibility that perhaps your inability to sustain an original thought is conceptually advantageous in a world of nihilistic narcissists, most of whom are drawn to twitter for that false sense of importance that momentarily counteracts their death drive. Regardless, this brings us to the next rule.

2. Avoid Originality

While originality may work for a few, rare accounts, particularly those with clever gimmicks or topically relevant content, it is best to avoid disturbing the thick, idiotic waters of twitter with thoughtful reflection, as such material rarely receives much positive attention. When in doubt, casually insert a funny little quip about your “bae” that doesn’t actually exist, or something about the booty having you a certain way, perhaps with a goofy image attached. As mentioned, jokes with “tittys” or “420” have historically performed well, as have whacky non sequiturs and those about “white girls” who “can’t even.” Don’t worry that you are most likely exploiting another community’s vernacular for humorous effect—as the next rule shows, lacking any understanding of history or social context is vital to your success.

3. Condescend, and Ascend

White girl jokes, as well as those insightful commentaries on “there vs. their,” are very effective because they succeed in two ways: 1) they are mean-spirited, condescending attacks on other people, something everyone on twitter seems to enjoy; and 2) they fail to acknowledge the social and political conditions that give rise to the content of the joke in the first place. This is the holy grail of humor, folks. Not only do you get to prove how smart and enlightened you are by pointing out another person’s perceived lack of intelligence, you don’t even have to recognize that the people you’re exploiting most likely live in communities that lack proper education and are too impoverished or destitute to offer meaningful exposure to the English language! And the brilliance of it is, you don’t even have to understand it any better than they do—you just have to seem like you do! Remember, twitter is all about presentation, and the right mixture of arrogance, ignorance, insensitivity, and privilege goes a long way!

4. Rub Shoulders

Follow celebrities and other popular accounts. Interact with them. Retweet everything they say. Lavish them with praise. Defend them when they’re not funny, which is often, and defend them when they say something blatantly sexist or racist. Be sure to attack anyone who disagrees as being overly sensitive and politically correct. Someone thought a rape joke wasn’t funny? Well it’s certainly not because rape jokes are disgusting and treat someone’s real trauma as insignificant and worthy of laughter. No, it’s because whoever disagrees with your twitter idol, the person you’ve spent hours hopelessly attempting to get recognition from —whoever disagrees with this individual is obviously an honorary member of the twitter police, someone so vehemently opposed to your right to free speech that they’ve confused you for some kind of asshole perpetuating an ugly cultural stereotype that gives rise to violence against women. Because language, as everyone knows, is just a bunch of words and made up stuff. It isn’t real. It certainly doesn’t communicate a vast fucking network of concepts and ideas between living human beings and literally change how they understand the world or anything like that. Nope, it’s just some symbols and shit.

5. Ignore The Person You Used To Be

OK. But what happens when you finally succeed, when at last the coveted Rob Delaney follow takes place? Well, now that you’ve made it, be sure to avoid those lowly idiots with less than 5,000 followers—unless you’re a disgusting piece of trash like [redacted], in which case you can follow all the women you find attractive and message them directly, using your cultural influence as leverage with the hopes that future sexual favors will be returned for your kindness and consideration. Regardless, the trick is to only interact with other big accounts and celebrities. Retweet them and make sure everyone knows to follow them, as if somehow your followers wandered blindly onto twitter from some weird part of the world where no one has any fucking idea who Andy Richter is. OK, maybe Andy Richter is a bad example, as my girlfriend, peering over my shoulder AGAIN, just responded “Wait. Who’s Andy Richter?” The point is: if you’re going to be on top in the twitter community and prove to everyone you’re not as big of a failure as you feel, you have to act like it. Of course, if you’re the kind of person that wants to be on top to begin with, you’re probably not going to have a hard time with that. Just forget about the person you used to be (the person you still are) and pretend you’re someone you’re not (namely, someone important). Everyone will love you.

That’s about it, really. So, now that you know how to succeed, get those jokes ready. Show the world your mediocrity. And always, always delete your @ replies. Those things are hideous.

I recently decided to cut my hair off and go natural. I made the decision on a whim and I felt empowered doing it and I love my new TWA. But my boyfriend absolutely cannot stand it. This is who I am so I’m wondering whether or not our relationship stands a chance? What do you think?

Dear Newly Natural,

That’s a tricky question, for many reasons.

It’s possible that he doesn’t dislike your natural hair, just the particular natural hairstyle you have. Just as there are dozens of different things women can do with weave or relaxed hair, there are dozens of different “natural” hair styles — twists, afros, short dreads, long dreads, braids, etc.

I bring this up because it’s often implied that if a Black man doesn’t like a Black woman’s natural hair style, he’s a self-hating slave to the euro-standard of beauty. And while that may be true in some cases, usually it just comes down to a man getting used to his woman with a particular hairstyle, and not immediately feeling the change.

Also, although men are the ones who get criticized for being upset about a woman’s hair change, many women actually would feel the same way if their bf/husband made certain hair-related changes. For all the women attracted to and/or dating men with dreads, I’m sure you’d feel a certain way if you came home one day and he cut all of his hair off. Same with the women who attracted to and/or dating men with full beards. And, I personally know that my fiancee would have an issue if I went all Pusha T on her.

You also have to consider the fact that maybe it’s not about the hair. Perhaps he’s upset you made that decision without discussing it with him first. Not asking permission, mind you. But discussing it. Perhaps the hair issue is a symptom of a deeper communication problem.

That said, a situation like this can say a lot about your relationship’s health. Basically, if he’s truly into you, he’ll eventually get over it and get used to your new hair. Maybe he won’t ever love it, but it won’t be a deal breaker either. And, if the hair continues to be an issue, he’s not the one for you.

Please elaborate on that! My point is that indeed patriarchy out-competed the other arrangements as you said. And that this became the natural for us.
Maybe you have another view on the natural part?

The way I understand it is that patriarchy was developed from a couple key concepts. First concept: beta males basically colluded against alpha males and decided their needed to be some way of more evenly allocating females to males. At some point betas realized they greatly outnumbered alphas and leveraged this. Second concept: (and this one W.F. Price can attest to!) females need help with gathering resources while they have a baby, and a man is a better resource gatherer than, say, ol’ grandma. So males had to agree to be providers for their allocated female(s).

I don’t think any of the above happens necessarily. Other situations can arise, such as bigamy. But bigamy leaves one male providing from multiple females while disenfranchising the major of males. That is a volatile social structure. Another direction to take is matriarchy, but the problem here is the males become rather shiftless and destructive (see urban ghetto culture for an example).

This is why I don’t consider patriarchy an instinct or necessarily a natural (i.e. primordial) order. It certainly involves some instincts but these can have a variety of outcomes. But wherever it became established in prehistoric settlements these settlements grew and bulldozed their less-stable neighbors. Eventually they became civilizations. And this is why the end result of Feminism is the collapse of Western civilization, which ironically could be replaced by the extremely patriarchal Islamic Caliphate (unless they too are infiltrated).

Another turn I agree with the last part. Between all unstable arrangements, patriarchy won by merit and providing a net gain. Although the first part makes me uncomfortable (and may happen to be an excuse for feminism).

Feminism may argument that a matriarchy may be the natural state. As you say, they can even see patriarchy barely as a restriction to man.

Even if women are in fact rejecting feminism (and I treat this with a lot of suspicion), I don’t see why men should not be vindictive since feminists were pretty damn vindictive to men (myself included, though I am well aware that I am not the only one) when male power was a myth.

Since young men got paid back for discrimination that wasn’t their fault, I don’t see why they shouldn’t turn around and do likewise to a subsequent generation of females. If feminism can come to an end now (and I am not convinced that it is dead yet), it also could have come to an end twenty years ago. I always take the attitude that if something can happen now, it could have happened many years ago as well.

You’re a man (I assume, if not I sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding) so you may not think that men can be thirsty for compliments. And you’re right to a point. Not all men lose their mind when women say nice things to them. But, some do. And the ones who do make it bad for the ones who don’t.

In my experience the ones who don’t have any sense are so far off in left field their responses to compliments are offensive at best…somewhat scary at worst.

But, honestly those are the bottom of the barrel, no-manners type dudes who act that way. For the most part, dudes just don’t know how to take compliments well. But, I’d venture to say that most folks don’t. General rule of thumb…say thanks, smile and keep it moving.

This is totally and completely real. One of my best friends is NOTORIOUS for being the substitute girlfriend for d-bags who break up with their girlfriends and STILL refuse to date her. I’m starting to realize that I’m only really attracted to men that are in some way unavailable. I have always though of myself as total GFM. I’m fun, but not wild. I’m happy, friendly, and well-adjusted. I’m definitely young enough to have kids.

The biggest emotional slap in the face I ever got was when I tried to get over someone by getting under someone else. I got too attached to a two-night stand, and when he ended up in a relationship with someone else a week after hooking up with me, I was like “WTF? How am I not girlfriend material?”

So I absolutely agree. Something like being on the rebound, being generally down in the dumps, or even, dare I say it, putting out too soon can DEFINITELY make you NGFM.
You can pretty much condense all of these indicators into one question: “Do I have my shtuff together?” If the answer is no, you probably don’t have any business being in a mature relationship. I’m not talking epic perfection, but you really have to have some clue as to who you are as a person and what makes you happy.

Other signs include:
5) You have no female friends because “you relate better to guys.”
6) You are excessively clingy which I agree could stem from one of the 4 listed in the article.
7) You have a miniature dog that you carry around in a customized hand bag. Some one is seriously projecting mommy issues.
8) You don’t carry a purse. Normal women carry purses, women who expect their boyfriend to carry their supplies are off limits due to their dependency issues.

I can’t relate to your list, but I totally relate to the d-bag with the tiny diamond inside.

He most definitely has trust problems stemming from the relationship. He thought he knew everything about his ex, including her feelings about him and he was obviously wrong. Since he thinks your one-night stand is completely out of character, he’s wondering if his judgments about you are incorrect, like they were with his last lady. The reason he refuses to call you his girlfriend is likely not because he doesn’t trust you, but more so because he doesn’t trust his judgment of you (and likely other people in his life). It’s not really about the one-night stand–if that wasn’t in your past he’d probably find something else to fixate on.

While his hesitations are somewhat understandable, they’re not excusable. It’s totally unfair of him to put his past relationship baggage on you and to assume that your commitment is questionable simply because his ex’s was. Besides this one-night stand, is there anything else about you that puts him on edge? Instead of discussing the incident that bothers him again, since that doesn’t seem to be working, ask him if there’s anything other than that on his mind. There may be more going on in his head than you think. And if not, perhaps by answering the question he’ll realize that he’s obsessing over one small piece of information when in all other ways you’re a spectacular partner. You may want to mention something about him that made you hesitant that you worked through. He needs to see that a relationship is not a one-way street.
