This is from 2008. If I were to process it today I would probably crop and process it differently.

I was using a not great camera at the time, its deficiencies are not too evident here.

Herons are tricky, if you spook them they make a horrible croaking cry of protest - and fly off.

So I was quite glad to be able to hang with this guy.

Their colours are very muted and the sky was heavily overcast - ideal conditions.

The juveniles also have some attractive rusty brown around their shoulders.

Herons have an interesting trick where they 'shadow' the water. Fish feel safer with protection
from above and swim into these apparently safe shadow areas. And then the heron strikes!

I remember there was a fisherman complaining about the poor fishing.

I pointed out the Barrow's Golden-Eye, heron, seals, and other fishermen - and suggested he was
simply a poor fisherman.

male - not technically a bee (Bees were introduced to North America by the Spanish in the 1700's), but an example of convergent evolution and an important pollinator nevertheless

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rufous_hummingbird):

-- small hummingbird, about 8 cm long (3 inches) with a long, straight and very slender bill.
-- These birds are known for their incredible flight skills. Some are known to fly 2,000 miles
-- during their migratory transits.

I can tell you that they are pretty aggressive in early Spring and will attack anything (including buzzing
any nosy photographers, that's a nasty little bill to see coming at your eyes). Their rolling dogfights with
the resident Anna's Hummingbirds are really impressive!

In poor light these guys are hard to tell apart. Even in good light it's tricky.

[Stephen and I saw a raft of these today; he thought it would make a nice picture
but I said the light was not nearly good enough. This is from March 2010.]

The green-headed guy is a Common Goldeneye, the blue-headed guys are Barrow's Goldeneyes.

The rest are either females or immatures and pretty hard to ID.

[For MickPt: ISO 100, f/8, 1/320 seconds, 280mm for a 35mm equivalent of 448mm]

It's hard to imagine how these tiny shorebirds flock without Air Traffic Controllers. There can be crowds of several hundred but they all seem to fly as one, the flock constantly changing shape, size, density and direction. They never seem to bump into each other either. [not sure this qualifies as Blurvision, but adding it anyway]
