c. gibbs @ the rodeo, nyc 01/30/08 - seeing c. gibbs at the rodeo bar is, in spirit, like seeing coltrane at the vanguard. it is just the perfect place to hear this music (altho did see him at the slightly more avant knotting factory and the music worked very well there as well). the genre impossible to pigeonhole - sort of the classic country death ballad in a minor key with a blast of pure feedback tossed in occasionally. "nick cave crossed with tom waits" as his myspace page notes http://www.myspace.com/cgibbs, which is a good as any starting place to check the tunes out. the man can play the hell out of his electric/acoustic and managed to easily fill two hours with original music, not a filler song in sight (oh and a couple covers hank williams and mississippi john hurt). the band was right there and came steamrolling back after the first set. the bass player, greg kept the show together and hopping, the guitarist mike cohen added some tasty licks and is a master of the pop/bang distortion at the end of a note and the drummer kristen mueller was so much fun to watch -she was havin a ball up there.

what a voice, what a beauty, and talented too...
all the songs originals, i believe (plus a rollicking, gutbucket cover of tom petty's 'mary jane'), and they held up just fine with the acoustic treatment

kailin garrity at crash mansion, 4/26. lovely AND talented, with a great voice and skills on the acoustic. played a mix of covers and originals in a alt-country/rock style. very down-to-earth and chatty, like she was at the neighbor's backyard barbecue. fun
