Tammi Otis and Cyn McCurry  Glazed and Confused? Workshop Demystifying Classic Techniques of Oil Glazing Jul 27 - 31, 2009 9:00am - 4:00pm

Glazed and Confused? We will de-mystifying classic oil glazing techniques in the five day workshop.
The old Masters employed techniques of layering oil glaze in their painting to achieve unparalleled depth and luminosity. Glazing in all of its various incarnations is the secret of paintings that appear to glow from an inner light.
Cyn McCurry and Tammi Otis offer an informal, fun approach to this classic style of oil painting for the novice to the advanced painter. They will cover extensive glazing and layering techniques, taking the student through preparation of the materials, mediums, color layering and composition. This intense five day workshop will start with the basic foundation of grisaille (the greyness - drawing) to final finish.
To ensure a solid emphasis on technique and materials, all painters will work from identical reference material and will complete 2 paintings in the course of the workshop.
The days will be structured as morning and afternoon sessions. Each beginning with a demonstration of that days technique objective. Students will then paint with lots of individual instruction from both Otis and McCurry. The day will end with a round of group discussion, question and answer.
Suggested supply list available after sign-up, painting medium and recipes will be provided.

This workshop will begin with an evening lecture focusing on a range of visual challenges the intermediate student faces including drawing, values, color and light temperature. Students will be given an opportunity to discuss any painting issues they are currently experiencing during this time.
Saturday’s class will be approached in two parts, first the morning session will focus on still-life painting and the afternoon class will center on figurative painting utilizing a live model.
Supply list will be provided after sign-up. Students will break one hour lunch on Saturday.

I am looking for ten students who are eager to learn in a class that is open to any ability from absolute beginner all the way through professional level. I will have a strongly suggested pastel list reflecting Fall Colors as well as a few other materials in addition to the $220 cost for the workshop.
I want to emphasize that you don’t have to be a pro pastel artist. Artists who work in other mediums are welcome. We have had great success in the past workshops and we’ve learned a lot.

Though egg tempera is one of the most time honored techniques in painting ever established, few artists practice it today, and fewer schools even teach it, preferring to concentrate their studies on more contemporary forms of art. For realism, however, no other paint can deliver the incredible delicacy or sharp, clean imagery of egg tempera. You can create detail as delicate as hair, and as solid as a rock wall, with equal confidence once you learn and practice the techniques that I teach. My workshops are designed to eliminate the mysteries of how to create and handle this unique paint. Whether you are a first year art student or an experienced artist looking for a new medium, I guarantee you will come away from my classes with fresh knowledge, and tools you can apply to this or any painting you pursue in the future.
Workshops will begin with a Friday evening orientation (a short lecture which I will keep as entertaining as possible), describing the paint and how it works. The next day will begin with a personal demonstration of applying and working the paint, after which students will begin working on paintings of their own.
As egg tempera paintings are detailed and time consuming, students are encouraged to begin with minimal paintings, something simple that will take very little time to draw and begin painting. Creating a complete work of art is not the goal. Learning to handle the paint to get desired effects is, instead, the emphasis of the classes.
Techniques such as layering through numerous glazes, stippling, scraping, fashioning brushes to your personal needs, and masking, are good examples of some of the concepts students will be learning. The final hours will be dedicated to aesthetic comments on critiques of each students work.
I will be demonstrating throughout the class, as well as moving around to individual students and consulting whenever needed. Students are invited to interrupt my demonstrations with questions about any aspect of the art they wish, from basic technique, to questions about design and composition of their work or my own.
I will be providing most of the materials needed with the exception of brushes and a small items list provided upon registration.

This three day workshop is designed for the emerging artists to the professional. The class will be limited to no more than ten students. I will have a strongly suggested pastel list reflecting Winter Colors as well as a few other materials in addition to the $220 cost for the workshop. The supplies and material list will be sent to all registered students.
The class truly depends on what you bring to the workshop as everyone will have different strengths. I will concentrate on assisting students with drawing, composition and color blending. I want to emphasize that you don’t have to be a pro pastel artist. Artists who work in other mediums are welcome.

Bruce A. Gómez  One Day Master Class in Pastel Saturday, Dec 12, 2009 10am - 4pm (or until your piece is finished)

Who Should Take This Class? This master class is designed for the fairly experienced pastel artist. If you have taken at least one workshop with me in the past year, you will feel confident in this class.
Purpose of the Master Class: Students will create a piece in one day, from soup to nuts, from start to finish, ending in a framed work suitable as an excellent holiday gift (to yourself or someone else).
Please bring two photo images to choose from (I will assist you in your decision, if you wish) or you can use one of my resource images. I will work intensively with all of you from a blank piece of paper, to pencil sketch, to application of color, through completion of the piece, to mounting the piece on fome-cor.
Supplies, Materials, Etc: Bring your own pastels. If there are colors you need but do not have, I would be happy to supplement. However, the sooner you let me know of your needs, the more likely I am able to help you out. If you need me to, I will send you a list of suggested supplies and materials.

There will be a forty-five minute lunch break – feel free to brown bag it, otherwise we will provide a list of nearby restaurants.
Please arrive around 9:45 for set-up. For you early morning coffee drinkers, there is a Starbucks several blocks east down Colfax from Abend (between Fillmore and Milwaukee). Tattered Cover Book Store also has a Nice Coffee Tea Shop with Sandwiches and sweets open 7am just two blocks east of the Gallery on Colfax.

Join Terrie Lombardi, pastel painter of the flower, for a special holiday one day workshop learning the art of painting miniature floral pastels. This is a fun and relaxed workshop for all levels. Terrie has developed her own vision and technique which enables her to compose floral images which demonstrate a rich use of color and shadows. Her class will emphasize teaching the technique of using odorless turpenoid and pastels to create an under-painting before adding layers of pastel to finish a beautiful floral painting. Terrie will guide her students through the process and provide individual attention to each student. Students should bring floral photo reference material to work from.
Give this class as a gift for the holidays. It is a great class for beginners.
