Outside Old Cemetry Lindau / Aussen am Alten Friedhof Lindau

The lower wall of the oldest part is interesting. When they built this away from the island for the plague victims 1510 they reused the ruin of the roman country house on the hill, so it is full of recognizable ceramic tiles that are almost 2000 years old. So part of it goes unplasterd now for people to see along with an interpetive marker. / Vorallem die untere Mauer vom aeltesten Abschnitt ist sehr interessant. Als sie wegen der Pestopfer 1510 auf dem Festland einen Friedhof bauen mussten benutzten die Lindauer Material von einer roemischen Landhausruine vor ort zuerst. So das es hier viel gebrannte Ziegelreste gibt die fast 2000 Jahre alt sind. So wird heute ein Teil davon unverputzt aber mit Erklaerung ausgestellt.

Krell's Chappel / Krellsche Kapelle

When the cemetary was new and the pest over, in 1515 the comunal graveyard chapel was found to go unused, as everyone prefered services on the island main church and then a quick burrial after the transport to Aeschach rather than all of it out there. So the building was sold to a wealthy family for their thomb. The guy who bought it for his family burrial place was some Oswolt Krell. He was a very rich Merchant, mostly famous for having his above average looks portraited by Albrecht Duerrer. / 1515 , als der Friedhof noch ganz neu war aber die Perst vorbei, fand man das die komunale Aussegnungshalle nie genutzt wurde, weil die Lindauer die Totenfeier lieber mit einem Gottesdienst in der Stadtkirche und einer schnellen Beerdigung gleich nach der Prozession zum Festland gestalteten. So wurde das Gebaeude an einen Mann mit Geld als neue Familiengruft verkauft. Und dieser Mann war Oswolt Krell. Er war ein Pfeffersack, inzwischen vor allem dafuer bekannt das er ziemlich gut Aussah und sich von Duerrer portraitieren liess.

Krell's Chappel / Krellsche Kapelle

Shut alas, although today it is not a family gravesite but a lapidary. And this is indeed propper January snow. Lindau usually got more snow that the Linzgau shore. This is mostly due to where the closest tributaries of the lake come from. / Leider war zu, auch wenn das heute keine Familiengruft mehr ist sondern eine Grabtafelsamlung. Und da liegt wirklich Schnee wie es sich im Januar gehoert, auch wenn wir daheim gleichzeitig keinen hatten. Das ist einfach so das es im Linzgau schneller abtaut als am bayrischen Ufer. Es kommt angeblich vorallem davon wo die naehesten Seezufluesse herkommen.

Inside Old Cemetry Lindau / Im Alten Friedhof Lindau

It's a Park and listed Landmark now with only the major Aedicules and not much free standing gravesites. Between 1915-60 they got cleared as Lindau got a newer, bigger and higher up locaded Graveyard. It's really pretty and peaceful, with lots of big trees. / Der ist inzwischen ein Park und unter Denkmalschutz, die meissten Grabstellen die nicht an Mauern angebaute Prunkkapellen sind, wurden 1915 -- 1960 einfach abgeraeumt weil Lindau sich einen neuen, groesseren und vorallem noch hoeher gelegenen Friedhof gebaut hat. Es ist sehr schon in diesem Park, und vor allem ruhig.

This guy, Michael Seutter was town major in the first half of the 18th century somewhen and the man who had the famous palais Cavazzen built for his family. He shares this thomb with two wives and 16 of his kids. / Der Herr Michael Seutter war Buergermeiser von Lindau irgendwann in der ersten Haelfte vom 18ten Jahrhundert und derjenige der sich das heute beruehmte Palais zum Cavazzen fuer seine Familie hinsellen liess. Jetzt ruht er dort mit den 2 Gattinen die er nacheinander hatte und 16 seiner Kinder.

Renaissance Aedicula with New Epitaphs / Renaissance Aedikula mit neuen Grabtafeln

In the last years the former graveyard was opened to site rental again, but under a very strict adoption scheme. Families that take over care for the upkeep of a listed building that has no prominent dead inhabitant but often destroyed inscriptions may reuse it, but only with ashes and very limited room for individual decoration of their slabs. / In den letzten Jahren wurde der Friedhof wieder zur nutzung freigegeben, aber mit strikten Auflagen. Familien die sich um so ein ein denkmalgeschuetztes Grabtempelchen ohne erhaltene Namen kuemmern und es erhalten wollen, duerfen dies auch nutzen, aber nur mit Urnen und sehr wenig Raum zur Gestaltung der eigenen Grabtafel.

Ornament with Skull / Verzierung mit Schaedel

With the coil in the sides those half-pillars are said to be of Esaias Gruber's shop. Anyways he was living at Lindau, it figures locals hired him. / Mit den Schnecken in den Seiten werden diese Halbaseulen der Werkstadt Esaias Grubers zugeschrieben. Jedenfals wohnte der in Lindau, also war es logisch fuer Buerger ihn mit den Grabmal zu beauftragen.

Inside Old Cemetry Lindau / Im Alten Friedhof Lindau

A rather modern interpertation of an Aesicula, if one considers that the graveyard was closed in 1915. It looks like almost Art Deco. However as it turned out, it's only the roof that is very new./ Ein ziemlich modernes Grabtempelchen, besonders wenn man bedenkt dass der Friedhof 1915 fuer Bestattungen geschlossen wurde. Das schaut schon fast wie Art Deco aus. Aber eigentlich ist nur das Dach sehr neu, wie sich heraus stellte.

Italian Marble / Italienischer Marmor

At least the website of the Old Graveyard Society has a little bit of information here. Nothing about the family entombed but about the artist. This Angel is by Emanuele Caroni. Wow, that can't have been cheap. Also dates it somewhat earlier than it looks from outside, the interrior is still pure classicism pre-1900. And the outside asides of the sheet metal roof -- thas still got the original renaissance stone slabs. / Zumindest hat die Website vom Foerderverein Alter Friedhof ein wenig Info hier. Das Engele ist ein echter Emanuele Caroni. Das kann unmoeglich billig gewesen sein. Auch sagt es etwas ueber das Alter der Einrichtung aus, Caronis Todesjahr scheint leider unbekannt, aber Werke gibt es nur bis 1895, so ist das hier sicherlich noch reiner Klassizismus von vor der Jahrhundertwende. Und der Ramen ist wohl immer noch der aus der Renaissance.

Said to be by Emanuele Caroni of Florence, the same who sculpted the Philadelphia Columbus Monument. / Angeblich vom Emanuele Caroni aus Florenz, dem selben der das Columbus Monument in Philadelphia geschaffen hat.

An other I could find a story about. A Mr. Hermann Naeher had it bought and decked out inside 1906 for his family. He was a spice and tabaco farmer who lived long at Sumatra and came back home. 1600 his foreberers where the local henchmen dynasty, later many became doctors and but it was him who secured a noble wall gravesite and created the monument. / Noch eines ueber das etwas herauszufinden war. Ein gewisser Hermann Naeher liess das vacante Grabmal 1906 im klassizistischen Stil fuer seine Familie sehr fein neu herrichten. Er war ein Gewuerz und Tabak Bauer der lange in Sumatra wohnte und wiederkam. 1600 waren seine Vorfahren das oertliche Henkergeschlecht und spaeter gab es viele die Doktoren wurden, aber offenbar konnte erst er eine repraesentative Grabnische erwerben.

Gravestone / Grabstein

This one, withour a roof but with a tree that has grown huge in front was especially intriguing because of the name. And it's true indeed, thats the old folks of the inventor of bavarian brown mustard. Johann Conrad Develey lived in Munich and has a grave there on the old southern graveyard, but he was born 1822 in Lindau. His forebearers where immigrated Huguenotts and Lindau was Lutheran at the time. / Das hier, ohne Vordach aber mit einen Baum davor der wirklich maechtig hochgewachsen ist interessierte mich wegen dem Namen besonders. Und es ist wahr, da liegen die Vorfahren vom Erfinder des orginal bayrischen Weisswurstsenfes. Johann Conrad Develey residierte zwar in Muenchen und ist da heute auf dem Suedfriedhof einer der markierten Prominenten, aber geboren wurde er 1822 in Lindau. Seine Vorfahren waren eingewanderte Hugenotten und Lindau war zu der Zeit Evangelisch.

Row with one potruding Aedicula / Wandzeile mit einem sehr hervorgehobenen Grabhaeusschen.

Sort of strange looks have the left graves to me, the strong colours and simple combination inbetween what seems original renaissance pillars in the back. Alas I found no expainations anywhere. Likely something that saw a lot of redecoration inside but respectful treatment of the sculpted elements. The age of the tympan below that gable I would rather not try to guess. Alas there is no explaination of that site of the society caring for the monuments. / Die linken Graeber wirken sehr ungewoehnlich, die bunte Einfarbigkeit der Flaechen und schlichte modern wirkende Schrift zwischen eindeutig orginalen Halbsaulen aus der Renaissance hinten an der Wand. Das muss wohl alles innen mal gruendlich umgestaltet worden sein, aber die interessanten Halbsaeulen liess man dabei in Ruhe. Das Alter des Tympanons unter dem Giebel zu Raten ist schwer, und es gibt keine Erklaerungen darueber auf der Foerdervereinswebsite. Schade.

Perhaps the strangest in the whole graveyard, very interesting. Its a renaisance work, classified as from Esaias Grubers Shop but reused in the 19th century with a well readable inscription on the lower marble decal. / Vieleicht der aussegewoehnlichste Grabstein im ganzen Friedhof, mit sehr interessanten Motiven, der Werkstatt des Esaias Gruber zugeschrieben, die untere Platte mit der Inschrift allerdings ist von einer Nachnutzung im 19ten Jahrhundert.

The society website talks of "female angels" but frankly -- what ever this buxom creature sans wings and with all the veggies in a conspicious place may be , I'd not call it exactly an angel. I am mostly intrigued by the split roots. Are those mandrakes or thought people back then the propper way carrots and parsnips should look is just like mine? And the thing in the middle, the cut huge one below the pear, asides from obvious freudian suggestions, what would that be? Oriental pomgranates should be quite exotic then and sure no local produce, Pumpkins where also some barely known new world vegetable in the early 16th century. Citrulles? But those also could not grow at Lake Constance. / Die Webseite des Foerdervereins spricht von "weiblichen Engeln"aber mal ehrlich -- was auch immer das sein soll mit Busen aber ohne Fluegel, dann jedoch all den Fruechtchen in einschlaegiger Position, Engel wuerde ich es nicht unbedingt nennen. Am meisten faszinieren mich die seltsamen Doppelwurzeln. Sollen das Allraunen sein, oder erwarteten die Menschen damals von ihren Moehren und Pastinken dass die so aussehen wie mein Eigenanbau? Und das grosse angeschnittene Teil ganz in der Mitte unter der Birne, abgesehen von der absehbaren freudschen Assoziation, was mag das sein? Orientalische Granataepfel waren sicher recht selten, und Kuerbise in der neuen Welt gerade erst von Columbus entdeckt worden. Citrullen vieleicht? Aber die wuchsen doch sicher auch nicht am Bodensee?

The veggie on the other one. Here it seems the fruit in the center was something else and even larger. Alas it is very weather worn. Beet or pinapple, thats the big question. Again the raddish or carrot by the side shows a little second tail, although in all it looks mostly like one huge root. / Das Gemuese auf der anderen Seite. Hier scheint die zentrale Frucht etwas anderes zu sein und auch noch groesser. Leider ist das staerker verwittert. Ruebe oder Ananas, das ist hier die Frage. Auch der Rettich bzw. die Moehre hier an der Seite hat zwei Schwaenzchen, aber insgesammt ist es eine einzelne Pfahlwurzel.

The free standing memorial stone of Gustav Reinwald who died in 1898. He got order into the town archive of Lindau and they made him a citizen of honour. / Der freistehende Grabstein des Pfarrers Gustav Reinwald, der 1898 starb. Der katalogisierte auch das Stadtarchiv von Lindau und dafuer machten sie ihn zum Ehrenbuerger.
