'Knock Knock'By Charlie Ryan
This is a true tale which involved a former 59 Sqn member Dick Doddsworth.
This particular year we were at RAF Wildenwrath in Germany and Dicky was the driver of a 4 ton Signals truck. We were based in a secure compound of the airfield known as the Third Lines. The compound was surrounded by a high security fence and access was via a narrow gated entrance which had to be kept locked. The compound was manned by both RAF and Army personnel and there was a bell by the gate so visitors could summon assistance for the gate to be opened. A sign next to the bell asked visitors to 'Ring Once for the RAF and Twice for the Army'. One day whilst trying to get into the compound Dick Doddsworth's truck collided with the gate post and damaged it quite badly. The following day the sign next to the bell bore the following addition - 'And Knock Hard for the TA' |
