Shower Queue - A photo that I altered in PhotoShop and is taken from my flat in
Mid-Levels looking into Victoria Prison of the female prisoners queueing up for a shower. I think its very unusual because where else in the world would you have a prison bang smack in the middle of the city and people be able to look out of their living room windows at the prisoners in their exercise yard? A piece of history, I think. And I wonder, in 2090, what will have happened to the Victoria Prison site.

The prison, which was built in 1841, closed last month and they still haven't decided what to do with the space (I worry that the gorgeous site and historic buildings will be sold off to a developer.)

A photo that I altered in PhotoShop and is taken from my flat in Mid-Levels looking into Victoria Prison.

This shows a man sunbathing on his roof, while across the road in Victoria Prison prisoners are in a line preparing for cleaning duties. I think it's an interesting shot as it shows just how close the prison was to regular city life.

Sunbather is part of an series exhibited by Kate Whitehead at the Fringe Club in November 2005.

The Memory Capsule Project is a nice idea of activism. To MOST, it is a onceptual interventive act for a sensational mass, if not the critical mass, to engage or relate themselves to the hisorical and futural contexts of personal and historical narration. In a time of uncertainty and polarization, the earthing of material and immaterial work, material and immaterial property and material and immaterial production create another aspect of this city, that is of both personal and individual dimension. The poster image MOST contributed in Jan 1 2006 hinges on the above and its otherness.

Story:
It was almost midnight. No one was on the streets leading to the Kwun Tong
Pier. I had my digital video camera with me because I was to go to the pier
for a rave party of DJ Sasha and others. I wanted to make a documentary of
the last party there. This street sign was on the way. The shiny
non-reflective surface was a surprise: it was like pushing the shutter and
everything showed a different (disfigured, strange, true, wild?) face.

Before HK get all the big break in Hollywood I worked for Director Tsui Hark as a Special Effects make –up artist for many of his movie including the team of great movie workers. This few images show some of the collaborative output made to produce some of the amazing physical effects in some Hong Kong movies. A memorable one because I get to know the story , experience , working with all the movie workers , artist and the magic of it.

The archive gallery, as an invented program resembling the traditional buried-torpedo type time capsule but in the scale of a city, is a mnemonic device for the registration, retention and recall of memory, a place where private memories (the archive) are separated from but reflective of the collective memories (the gallery) of the city itself.

As a collapsible set of realities, and/or virtualities, described in a language of semiotics - the semiosic- (symbolic) and catoptric (reflective) universe - the intention is to concretise, in terms of program, the interchange between the labyrinthine character and mirror reflectivity of both the city (the outer world) and memory (the inner self).

"The catoptric universe is a reality which can give the impression of virtuality, whereas the semiosic universe is a virtuality which can give the impression of reality."
Umberto Eco, Semiotics and the Philosophy of Language

The archive gallery is about architecture of labyrinth and mirror, which functions as the labyrinth (network) and as the mirror (images of containment) simultaneously.

As labyrinth (network), it mediates spatial units and their relationships to one another. It mediates

"the relationships between the measurements of its space and the events of its past: the height of a lamppost and the distance from the ground of the usurper's swaying feet...the height of that railing and the leap of the adulterer who climbed over it at dawn... The city... does not tell its past, but contains it like the lines of a hand, written in the corners of streets, the gratings of windows, the banisters of the steps, the antennae of the lightning rods, the poles of the flags, every segment marked in turn with scratches, indentations, scrolls."

As mirror (images of containment), it defines, self-reflectively, spatial enclosure and ego enclosure. It contains

The site, in the junction of Sai Yeung Choi Street South and Nelson Street in Mongkok district, is 30m long by 18m wide. The parallel concrete walls rise to a height of about 30m,a point which the opposite residential blocks align with in elevation, and descend to a depth of about 12m to MTR exit. The sets of opposite parallel walls create a repeated but varied reading of the entire procession spiraling up, with discrete spaces in between.

The city of Hong Kong is always physically changing. New buildings are being erected at a rapid rate and shops appear and disappear altering the sights of the city. This changes inspired me to create the Personal Skyscraper project since year 2000 which is a skyscraper costume made by foam board and adhesive tapes. It reflects the fragility of the modern skyscraper, the contemporary modern society, and its people. My intention of this project is to inspire the viewer to be more aware of the architectural environment.

Here is a real story, one day when I was dressing up as a skyscraper walking down Temple Street as an experiment testing the reaction of the people, many people noticed me but some didn't because there was so much other stuff to look at in Temple Street. Then I noticed a shop keeper nearby was looking at me for a while, suddenly as if processed he pointed at me shouted: I know! I know what it is¨ I slowly turned and look at him then he shouted real loud with a smirk on his face: it's art!! I was so proud and touched by his intuitive reply and I slowly raise my hand making a thumbs-up gesture as a reply then slowly drift away into the crowd.
