✎ Closed in 2014 & abandoned completely in 2015 when Fernwood Hotel & Conference Center declared bankruptcy, and listed the entire $1.15M mortgage on the property among their debts. The hotel also accumulated more than $1M in delinquent property taxes & about $150K in liens from utility bills on top of the mortgage. It was supposedly sold {some time in early 2018} for $2.5M to the Jinyin Temple of Sino Esoteric Buddhism --- a Buddhist group based in Queens, NYC, NY --- which plans to turn the former hotel into a retreat center. The sale/purchase cannot be confirmed, however.... Meanwhile, the property's buildings are quickly succumbing to the ravages of nature & the elements.

✍ Among the first houses to be built in a private housing community... Unfortunately, this "country" style of house has fallen out of favor. As the community has expanded the people who originally moved and built there looking for a peaceful, quiet retreat from city life --- or just a woodland place to live that wasn't completely isolated from the world --- have steadily been leaving. The new houses are all big, modern constructions and the new residents are no longer nice and quiet and the community is no longer the retreat it once was. So these older houses sit unused --- some are for sale --- and in various states of disrepair.

✍ This poor house wasn't always this hideous pink color.... It used to be a dark tan to blend in with its "country setting". It was also nicely surrounded by trees. Then the original owner/builder sold it and this happened -- along with the cutting down of a whole bunch of beautiful, healthy trees =(

✍ This charming little house was someone's pride 'n' joy once upon a time... Just look at the detail on the little shutters =) I've passed it a few times to date, always unable to stop to photograph it for one reason or another, but this time I was determined to get a shot of it.... There's no telling how much longer it will be left standing, after all. The amazing thing is that the area took a devastating hit from Superstorm Sandy a few years ago that leveled big, strong trees hundreds of years old and new houses, too, yet this unloved little house is still there =)

✎ Dingmans Creek boasted a dozen mills at its peak. At Factory Falls Joseph Brooks, a Welshman who had immigrated to Philadelphia, & family ran a bustling woolen mill from 1823 to 1832 - a rarity outside of big cities. The stone woolen mill was 3½ stories high & employed about 80 workers. Unfortunately, his sheep were devoured by wolves or died from eating poisonous laurel. Supplies, operatives, and materials -- such as expensive raw wool -- had to be brought in from Philadelphia, and the finished products shipped down to the city by wagons; a trip which took 10 days. Brooks died in 1832 and the mill was abandoned. All that remains of that factory are these ruins.
