Here is one of the last photos I took on the 2009 World Wide Photo Walk, and the last one that I felt came out decent enough to show. As can be seen through the archway at the end of the stairs a dust front blew in on us only halfway through our scheduled time, turning the sky an orange that would have been far more interesting if the air wasn't so gritty. Within a half hour nearly everyone had made it to the Gelato shop that had been picked as our gathering spot. Sharing the ice cold treat inside, in air conditioning, sharing conversation and previews of our photos on our camera LCDs. Visible is is dust that landed on the lens.

littletank suggested a crop focusing on the parking sign, which is a good idea as the original image lacks a real subject of focus. This crop I think still doesn't quite draw you to a specific subject, although the steak of light from the passing car and flaring street lights draw you close to the middle where the word "Public" has an easier time grabbing attention. I also tried to dim the sign on the building in the background so it wouldn't seize as much attention. My first attempt was rather blatantly obvious so I think that's something I will want to practice.

I had the chance to attend this year's WesterCon (FiestaCon in Tempe Arizona) where I decided to make my first tries at night photography. This was on the street in front of the convention hotel. This was an 18 second exposure at f29 and 200 ISO. You might notice that the parking sign is not the 'standard' color scheme. This isn't an exposure problem, Tempe decided to change the colors after realizing that the standard parking sign colors were similar to the team colors of their rival U of A in Tucson.

Taken during the 2009 World Wide Photo Walk. When I took this picture I was most interested in the texture/pattern produced by the escalator steps, the reflections in the side panels, and the way the reflections almost hid the column. Converted to B&W and then toned as I felt the original color was distracting. It wasn't until later that it occurred to me that the toning makes this look like a cold, perhaps winter picture rather than taken in the high heat of July.

Looking through all the pictures I took on my trip to the zoo this was one of the first to be chosen as a keeper. I love the combination of one meerkat standing guard while the other crouches looking curious and ready to explore.

The Meerkats were great fun to watch and I spent quite a bit of time there. They had all been separate but when I saw these two were approaching each other I got the camera ready and caught this 'kiss'.

The 300mm stabilized lens I was borrowing with the camera let me pull in close. I really want to get one when I have the money to spare.

For the majority of the time I was at the zoo the fennecs were sleeping. Not too surprising for a desert creature, who wants to be active in the heat of day if they don't have to do so? (Much the same reason we have rejected daylight savings time here)

This is the same fennec that I produced a black and white image of. I felt the plain black and white image looked too cold, so after reviewing how to add some toning I gave the highlights some orange and the shadows some brown. Much warmer than the plain B&W version.

This picture just didn't seem to work in color so I decided to manually adjust it to black and white. The fennec pops out a little more from the background than in the original, and the branch is not nearly as distracting as in the original.

This was a happy accident. The autofocus decided to focus the rock slightly ahead of this guy and I missed it until reviewing the pictures. However, it seems to have caused the fennec to have an almost painted appearance.

This squirrel was not one of the animals officially on exhibit at the zoo. Like squirrels everywhere this guy went where ever he wished. At the moment he was perched on a high point in the iguana exhibit from which he could watch the curious crowd.
