Kalaupapa Cliffs James Brennan Molokai Hawaii
Kalaupapa, located on the north shore of Molokai, is separated from civilization by the tallest sea cliffs in the world on one side and the pacific ocean on the other. The Kalaupapa peninsula was established in 1873 as a leper colony and is the famous site that St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope attended to these outcasts. When isolation was no longer mandatory in 1969 due to understanding the disease and new medicines, the state considered closing the settlement. However, due to intervention by many people, it has been kept as a home for the remaining patients and is part of the United States National Park Service and known as Kalaupapa National Historical Park.
