When I login to 23hq, I check "stay logged in." I don't recall logins timing out until recently. Now when I go to the 23hq home page, I see the typical "welcome to 23hq" content and a "log in" button. This happened yesterday and again today. FYI I am using the latest Firefox and I have not deleted any cookies.

Just to confirm, the problem is that logins aren't remembered from day to day -- but if you reboot your browser or even your computer within a few hours of logging in, your credentials are remembered?
I'll need a bit of extra information from you guys in order to come up with a good explanation. Can you mail me a copy-pasted version of this page at steffen@23hq.com:
http://www.23hq.com/SYSTEM/debug-information
I'll need the information from two different scenarios:
a) Just after you've logged in.
b) After you've come back to the site and has been asked to log in again -- but before doing so.
Also, be absolutely sure *not* to share the debug information at the forum as this could be a potential security risk. Just send them directly to me instead...

Steffen, I will respond to your email later today. Incidentally, 23hq has been very slow in the last 24h. It crashed (I got Server Error) late last night around midnight (GMT - 5). I never saw that before.

Hi guys,
Having looked at both of your e-mails I can (technically) explain the problem: That when you come back to the site, a specific cookie including your log-in information (ad_user_login) isn't been sent from your browser. Originally, this cookie is set to persist in the browser's memory for quite some time (a few weeks as I recall), but the browser may choose to ignore this instruction depending on your configuration.
Two things to try out since you're both using the same version of Firefox (3.6.13):
- Go to the Privacy tab in the browser settings and have a look at your choice for storing cookies -- are cookies set to expire?
- For the sake of debugging, test if you get the same problems when using Chrome (or another good browser).
Best,
Steffen

Ok, it seems that I had set that cookie to expire. The reason I set it that way likely was that it contains the word "ad", so I assumed that it was some kind of advertising tracking.

Cool guys, glad to hear there was an explanation for this issue -- sorry about the oddly named cookies ;-)

Steffen, Does that mean I need to do something in firefox to prevent the "ad" cookie from expiring? I don't see a way to do it under Tools -> Options -> Privacy.

Chrome is definitely keeping me logged in. Firefox is logging me out after a few hours.

Can you try to disable temporarily all your Firefox extensions and see if this solve the problem? It might be a spam/ad fighting plugin cleaning-up our cookie?

I have been dealing with frequent logouts since my original post in February. Recently, the logouts have become even more frequent. I must login five or six times a day. Furthermore, my userid and password are no longer remembered -- now I must retype them each time I login. I don't know if this is related to cookies.
FYI my ad_user_login is set to expire in the year 2034. My ad_user_session_id is set to expire six minutes from now.
Anyway, I wonder if anyone else is having this problem, or has been able to solve it. I'm using Firefox 4.0.1.
