I remember these guys when I lived in Europe.... Every tall pole had a nest on it.... Not so charming when it's your roof they want to call home -- and "decorate" accordingly ;)

Wonderful series of shots!

Oh my, this is most interesting! Not sure I would enjoy such tenants on my roof, however :) .

Well, that's the Affenberg. An extreme place where storks are feed yearround. They in part live of this free attraction drawing in tourists that will go to the restaurant and pay the fee to also meet the barbary makaques, the deer and the carps. The round platters are intentonal installations to offer the storks a nesting site. In old times a stork nesting on the roof was considered a lucky sign, however 50+ nests on the premisses, I dont think a lot of people wish for that amount of luck to clean up after.... ;o)

Terrific shot.
Not a problem (or a blessing!) we get in England although I understand that we did get them up until the 'Mini Ice Age' of the 16 the 17th centuries when they went away and apparently only came back in the past decade or so in very limited numbers - something I recall reading a while ago and my memory could be at fault, so please don't quote me!

Andy,
according to rewildingbrittain.org, no breeding occurred since 1416. There are a few obvious April 1 news stories around that claim first stork nest since centuries in sundry odd places...
However wild Storks are easy to bring back from the brink and re-settle places where they once lived as long conditions their became suitable again. Renaturating marshes for the comeback of other critters attracts them. Just wait and see as numbers in mainland europe raise and support your marsh renaturating projects no matter at what species benefit it is geared.... ;o)

Thank you Sonja.
At the back of my mind I seem to recall having heard about that date before. Don't know where I got my info from! Pleased to be put right!
