Carew Castle / Burg Carew

Across the walls an other view of the window with the confusing heraldic decorations. Again : this is not the Tudor place of orgin, just something that was won and given to an associate who helped them to power.

What a fantastic shot! Well done! I really enjoy looking at photos of these old castles. I wish we had them in Canada, but the closest things we have to castles are old battle forts, I suppose.

Legend has it that a prince from the greater area, Madoc ab Owain Gwynedd, (his Dad was kind a little bit further north, Carew is still in medieval Deheubarth, not Gwynedd) went to settle in america already in 1170 with many of his friends and subjects, and that the tribes in the Great Planes that had members with blue eyes that cant be explained as offspring of white men after the westward expansion campain, would all come from this lost group of welsh people. Somehow they forgot most of their original culture as they interbreed and learned to live a more mobile life without heavy stone castles as a base in the prairie. It is said there is one last rather simple stone fort they built on the Ohio River before they became plains indians, in a place named Devils Backbone. The last place where those lighthaired blue eyed natives with allegedly welsh leanwords in there language where found and recorded in writing and painting was not all that far from where you live, somewere down in North Dakota, the Mandan. They perished however in a pox epidemic not long after and there is no genetic material to confirm or disprove the stories of their orgin. :o(

Wow! That's a very interesting story.

That's right, North Dakota is not too far from where we live.
