It was a sorry ruin in spite of being billed as "Castle" which is actually wrong, as a Kehlhof is not a castle, its a farm belonging to a monastry, so it got a nice enough mainbuilding and some defenses, to represent a little and to be of use in case a traveling abbot wishes to stay over himself. Part of the walls date to the 13th century, but stair cases, upper floor window shapes and suchlike are all from the baroque. After secularisation it was used for all sorts of government public purposes, last by the french commanders after WWII until the 70s. Then the ruin was inhabited by poor people not able to pay a rent befitting the market, sent to just house there substandard without any repairs or renovation for a long time. Only by 2012 or so it was bought by an investor who made it into modern flats preserving all pretty historic elements still in place. Now it is looking neat again.
