The reason I chose to use a black and white image to select the black and white points is because I am much more experienced in handling monochrome material than colour.
6. Sharpen
Create a new transparent layer over Background. Select a small (say 100 x 100) rectangle in one of the corners, and bucket-fill the selection with white. Then Select by color with "Sample merged" checked and Threshold = 0, and sample the white rectangle. Now all the pure white pixels in the merged image will be selected. If no pixels are selected, keep raising the threshold by 1 at a timetime. Using this technique, I found a single pixel with Red=255, Green=255, and blue=252. Pull a pair of guides over it so you won't lose it, then Select None.
Repeat the exercise with a small rectangle filled with black. Once you have your black and white pixels located, delete the transparent layer and select your two rectangles for EZA.
