ID = Cistus Albidus 'Snowfire' ↔ Cistus Albidus 'Snow Fire' ⇢ Rock Rose.

Nice find -- though it'd be hard not to notice the showy blossoms =)

Accoring to my own tries to find it, it should be a Common Gum Cistus (https://pfaf.org/user/Plant.aspx?LatinName=Cistus+ladanifer )
They make hybrids of this with related rock roses to pass on the bicolour caractreristic.

I don't agree, but it's not my call in the end.... The leaf structure doesn't support your final choice of species, IMO. Gum cistus has much larger, narrower leaves and the "eye spots" are much less pronounced on the flowers.

Really? But this is in the Aaroma Rockgarden. If it is not the true ladanum source, it is totally out of place. Other rock roses do not have much of this perfume stuff.

The things with fragrance gardens is that they tend to stock whatever is fragrant and showy... Fragrance is subjective, too. Some things they grow may be barely fragrant, others more fragrant at night vs day (or vice versa) and others may be fragrant only when something comes in contact with it.... Let's not forget the varied ability among people to pick up scents, too.... Very subjective.... Most Cistus species are noted as have fragrant blossoms, so that may be enough for to qualify for the garden maintainer. I can't tell you for sure, but I do know neither this specimen, nor the larger shrub you photographed, have the unmistakable foliage associate with Common Gum Cistus. It does match the foliage of C. album, though, which is smaller, more ovate, more rose-like. C. ladanifer's leaves often get confused with Peonies, hence the common misidentification with folks calling their flowers Peonies. Gum Cistus' red petal spots also tend to be smaller and lighter in color -- more toward the red end than burgundy.

But, in the end it's your call which ID you feel most confident in.

I have not especially looked if they reek of anything. We just went through there and rather quickly as a group. Aroma Garden had a few stingy insects flying about and anyway it was not on anyones special wish list, in fact I had no idea then its a special garden for smelly plants, I learned it later from the website. I know the term ladanum, from a novel. Seems it was pricey and sought stuff once . But somehow I thought it is won from something else, as I did not really know about rock roses. I did know Helianthemum als Felsroesle so I thought the perfume must be won from that wee things. I just came across all that info now, also websites that claim the other rock roses do not have any the stuff. Asides they say the Rock Roses do not smell from the blossom. It's all a gel in the leafs of Cistus ladanifer. So I did at least not miss anything when not sniffing at the flowers I guess.
