Indeed, the Rhine got most of its very best and grandest parts early on, when it is still almost a mountain brook. The Delta right above Lake Constance where it adds its first german rivers is a very interesting birding hotspot. It is the very first kilometres of the river where larger motorized boats that fishing nutshells can go at all and quite artificial maintained in its form to ensure the big lake not to change it's shape from the alpine gravel and glacier meal. What you see here is today not really part of the river, but more a very closed off bay that leads into a maze of dead waters with the smal harbour of Fussach hidden inside and very reglemented individual boat traffic back and forth through the strictly protected zone. This is why it got so many water traffic signs, but no true drift. Most winters it just freezes shut for weeks.....
I stood on a smal embankment with an artificial lagoon and the New Rhine with its swimming gravel facrory behind me taking this shot, facing the touristic Old Rhine at the Swiss border, but it is well hidden behind this tip in the distance.
