Just my opinion, gerrit, but I totally disagree. The emotional content of this photo is very dependent on it's many contrasts. Not only does the bottom strip ground the scene, but the dark area on the left gives a balance to the area on the right. What the artist has created, here, is is an organic mondala. The tree needed to be in the center or this effect would have been lost. Rules of good composition sometimes go against shear genius.

Oy! What a beautiful discussion!

I didn't crop the picture and I don't usually... specially in a picture like this, which is Photoshop free except for the slightest Curves adjustment. When someone asks me why I don't crop my photos I normally respond I'm too proud to do that (as in "I like to think I always frame a picture right on the first time"), and that's mostly the truth.

Also, in my judgment some subjects absolutely *require* a centered/unorthodox composition. Maybe I use this solution a bit too much, but life is full of choices! There's no right way of looking at things.
