Living with sensitive skin can be difficult because you need to be aware of every product that comes in contact with your face, hands and skin. Over the last 30 years the number of people that believe they have sensitive skin has risen to 70 percent, according to a dermatologist in Los Angeles. While this represents more than double an increase since 1980, it is important to note that more skin care products designed for sensitive skin have become available and continue to improve in effectiveness.

Sensitive skin can be the product of a number of different situations, including:

Eczema
Rosacea
Allergies
Medications

If you have sensitive skin, it is extremely important to talk with your dermatologist about tips for washing your face in a way that avoids further irritation. Be gentle when it comes to cleaning your face, and be sure to stay away from antimicrobial hand soap, because the chemicals in the soap will dry out and damage your skin. Even if the soap you use is made of natural ingredients, it may cause a reaction, so take caution when using new products with which you are unfamiliar.

Once you have the right face wash or soap in hand, there are a few techniques to use that will help you get clean skin without irritation:

Limit hot water use, because it washes away the natural oils in your skin, leaving it dry.
Pat yourself dry with a towel instead of rubbing, because rubbing can cause further irritation.
Remember that chemicals and detergents are what make soap lather, so you don’t need a lather to get a good clean.
