Moving can be stressful. Not only do you need to arrange for your new home, you have to worry about selling your old house or making sure your apartment is in good condition for the next tenant. You need to pack up all of your belongings, change your current address and make sure electricity is turned on in your new home. There’s so much to do and it’s easy to become stressed during this time. Staying organized the months and weeks prior to moving can help you cut the stress out of your moving day.

If you know you’re moving months in advance, you can start planning for your moving day ahead of time. This will eliminate some of your stress by spacing out your moving tasks so that you don’t feel overwhelmed with all of the details. Some tasks you can take care of in advance include researching and deciding on a moving company to help with your moving day. You can also start organizing your home, purging it of trash and items you don’t need any more. The less you need to pack, the less you need to worry about.

If you have the floor plans of the home you’re going to move into, you can start planning what each room will be used for. This will help you during the packing phase of your move since you can sort your belongings into boxes for specific rooms. Start by packing items you don’t use a few weeks before your moving day. The more you can pack ahead of time, the easier it will be to manage your packing and planning as the deadline approaches. You will also want to pack a suitcase of items you’ll need the day of your move and the days immediately following. Pretend you’re going on a vacation for a few days and pack what you would need for that trip. This will allow you to have the items you need while you’re unpacking your household goods.
