There is a specific name for these clouds, but I just call them exploding Q-tips :-)

Anna, I have books that list cloud formations, but I was hoping someone would just tell me.

And I'm glad you did, I like what you call them better than any formal name!

Thanks for the comment.

Fantastic light!

Thanks Dan-Tuyet Tham, I enhanced it a little bit so the structure of the clouds would really show.

This kind of thing is tricky, as you are never really quite sure if you have done it right.

@nellyb, thanks for the fav - I have been enjoying your pics but somehow I usually can't think of comments.

I think it may be Cirrocumulus clouds. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cirrocumulus_cloud

Thanks again Dan-Tuyet Tham, especially for the link.

I found these in my Favourites from Herr Volker, bookmarked long ago:

Of course, now that I see them again, I am lusting after a wide lens!

After following your link a bit, I think Altocumulus in the Mackerel pattern?

Anyhow, they were very low and oppressive.

I have maybe a dozen more if you're interested but this was the best.

Yes, you are right about the Mackerel clouds.
Long time ago I posted among other skyscapes this photo: http://www.23hq.com/photogroup/sky/photo/3880196

Thanks for the confirmation.

Yours is a better picture, but maybe too peaceful?

Apparently these clouds usually mean bad weather on the way,
maybe the menace I have added to my clouds (slightly) is OK.

Thank you!

yes, I think it is alright :-)

I think it might be God's fingerprint we witness here : )
Great shot!

Thank you for the lovely comment @b4light!

As with your picture, the sky is the subject here.

Here the sun is a very unrealistic colour ... I tried to mask it out as
much as possible with the trees - which I needed for scale anyway.

I might have tried a Blended exposure instead, but I only had my
walk-about P&S with me, so probably not worth too much effort.
