You sometimes may not have an idea, but the carpets we use on a practical basis in our homes, have a long history behind them going down to the pre historical eras. Carpets once was the most highly prized possessions in Europe when the crusaders likely returned home with them, during the middle ages, even though Europeans rarely did any influence to the designs of the oriental carpets. The swastika symbol, which is regarded as a symbol of good fortune can be found on many carpets from America, Europe, India and China. Some carpets tend to include various medallions in their designs too. Going down the history of carpets, the famed Pasyryk carpet is the oldest carpet in the world surviving today. It was excavated from the grave of Scythian prince in 1949 and is believed to be 2000 years older. The reference for the use of a red carpet to mark the traditional and ceremonial routes of politicians and leaders is the Argamemnon (458 B.C) by Aeschylus. The longest carpet in the world is Qasr al-Alam carpet in Iran which was completed in 2007 and is 5625 square feet in size. The most expensive carpet ever sold in the world was at an auction, an antique silk Isfahan rug from central Persia sold at $4,450,000 in 2008. |
