See more: https://maps123.net/en/AT Austria is a federal republic made up of nine states (German: Länder). Since Land is also the German word for "country", the term Bundesländer (literally federated countries) is often used instead to avoid ambiguity. The Constitution of Austria uses both terms. Austrian land can decide laws that stays in the limits of the constitution and each land has representatives in the main Austrian parliament. The principle of federation is reflected in the fact that the federal provinces have their own authority in legislative matters (through the provincial parliaments) and administrative matters (with the provincial government being the highest authority) and that they are involved in federal legislation through the Federal Council (Bundesrat).
