wow

Saw the subject of FSK's poem at the National Museum of American History a couple of years ago. It's being restored in a special lab designed so that visitors can still view the flag. Was laid out flat and is massive. Gave me chills to stand there and look at THAT flag. Couldn't move from the spot for several minutes. Many looked on beside me. And while other parts of the museum were filled with visitors' noise, the viewing area at the Conservation Lab was filled with a contemplative, palpable quiet.

Hey, Atom! Seems the whole thing is (or was--I don't know how long the restoration was to take) in rather dire shape. That Conservation Lab is amazing--nobody actually touches the flag. With their bodies anyway. If I remember correctly, there's something the restoration crew lays upon that gets them close enough to it so they can work, but they are essentially suspended above it. Actually, I did a little hunting and here's an image of the crew at work http://americanhistory.si.edu/SSB/7_preserving/7d_project/fs7d.html
