something about the colour palette again that I really like. how much are you (if at all) making adjustments between camera and screen?

thats a good question helen, and something i've had to think about anew working with film.
short answer is- i adjust it to what i saw (or thought i saw)through the lens/in my head. barely at all sometimes, sometimes a lot if my tech skills w/camera were sucking at the time (not that my photoshop skills are highly developed). the truth is usually more interesting than any fiction i could lay atop it.
the most important facet, i guess, is my picture-taking evolved from making music which in turn came from both painting and writing, and in a strange sense encapsulates all of them (again, to me).
where many other art forms are so subdivided with almost everybody having overriding filters that disallow them experiencing something ("i hate/love poetry, fiction/nonfiction... country/rock/jazz/classical etc"), pictures are just, well, pictures, and people will usually be more open to looking. we are such an image-saturated society, and yet the genre divisions are fuzzy/nonexistent, so there is an opportunity to 'say' the same things to a much larger group. each picture has a story (or maybe just an untranslatable haiku) in it, and if it doesn't come through, i usually don't use it.
the wild swings in palettes lately have much to do with the many different brands & speeds of film i've been using the past 300 pics or so, crossed with the crappy scanner and its awful software.
yikes, that was long-winded & haven't even had the morning coffee yet

I don't know how you find time to post so many fine pics especially as they go through the extra 'filter' system of scanning too. Am fan of lo-fi crappy hardware as am of lomo photos. Keep at it matey

hey thomas! actually, not the noir series - those i took the pictures first and then used 23 as a place where they could screen and choose. however... my first book cover, out earlier this year WAS found on 23! by the director of the"centre of time", a philosophy department in australia. they were looking for a bertrand russell related foto and asked if they could use this one http://www.23hq.com/insky/photo/370115
as a cover. strange and magical eh? i'll post a pic of the book cover after i move and get the boxes unpacked - hope it's in there somewhere

interesting. finding a way to make it easy to clear rights, etc. is on the to-do list - or posting it to photo marketplaces.

oooh, now THAT is an intriguing idea.....still haven't gotten around to trying out shutterstock or fotki, but the ability to manage the relationship from this site would make it an easy choice. as i understand, many of those sites have minimum resolution standards, so anyone wanting to take advantage of it would probably upload the larger filesize - i, for one usually scale them down as an optimized jpeg. depending on how many people took advantage of this, it could extract a heavier toll on the servers, perhaps?
on a completely unrelated note, i can't for the life of me figure out how to extract the slideshow link mentioned in the blog...just get a java command that, of course, does nothing outside 23's confines. what the heck am i doing wrong? wd love to show the f'ites what they're missing
