I am not sure if I can use this image for the contest... I have shot it in color (there was not really much color in it), then converted it to monochrome using layers and finally I made it sepia using the tutorial on the gimp.org. I really like it better as sepia than as B&W...

I've done the same. Using the standard sepia tool gives a too light or too redbrown colour.

Just to compare quickly. I tried Google's picasa. I converted into b&w, sharpened it and then I used the button "warmer look". And yes I got a better sepia image.
In Gimp I tried to do such things and finally I got this

Thanks, Ger! :)
I shot this picture with my Sony p8 - a point and shoot camera...
In Gimp I also removed and part of the noise and one hair, which had fallen right on the "diffeomprphic copy ...". :)
Also in Gimp I have great control over the color and the intensity of the sepia color. I suppose I could have done it better.
