couldnt see an edition number on it, but it was printed in Canada in 1985; I got it through the Amazon UK site, via a US reseller. IM also looking forward to reading - 'The Cuckoo's Egg' by Clifford Stoll.

"Cuckoo ..." was a good read, though the author gets a little preachy toward then end. It was fun seeing a So-Cal techno-hippy have to work so closely with "The Man". Stoll writes a lot about having to work so closely with shadowy government agents he is not sure he wants to trust.

A similar (and very good) read is "The Hacker Crackdown" by Sterling. Excellent presentation of the hacker ethos through history.

other titles in this area would be "the hacker ethic" and john markoff's new "what the doormouse said: How the 60s Counterculture Shaped the Personal Computer". Markoff's book has some good stuff that haven't been reported before.

Thanks for the tips on other books, I have also read 'The Inner Circle' by Bill Landreth; which was rather dull since it related mostly to techniques with very old systems - its good to know there are other good books out there on this subject.
