The Sunken Cistern is an ancient water reservoir built during the 5th century on the site of what used to be a famous basilica. It’s said over 7000 slaves were used in the construction of the cistern. Its capacity if of roughly 100000 tons of water. It has been featured in the James Bond movie “From Russia Wit Love”. Of special interest here are two base columns featuring the head of Medusa, the origins and purpose of which are unknown. The softly lit attraction creates a gentle ambience. It’s a fantastic treasure in summer for its cool subterranean breeze.
